Turning Point
Episode 6 of Breathe: Into The Shadows sees us jump back in time and explain the past; in particular those shocking scenes at the end of the previous episode. Here we follow a young Avinash rejected by his father and caught in a horrific accident that took the life of his parents. In the wake of the accident, Avi is left alone and forced into a boarding school. There he meets Professor Krishnan who invites him in with open arms. Unfortunately the other kids are not so welcoming, bullying him and causing him to be increasingly isolated. This, combined with the shock from the accident, prompts Avinash to start exhibiting psychological issues that manifest itself into multiple personality disorder. One side of his personality is the Avi we know and the other a mysterious alter-ego known simply as “J.” When one is awake, the other is asleep meaning J’s actions are completely unknown to Avinash. However, unlike Avinash, J actually knows about Avi lying dormant in his mind. Alone and afraid, a young Avinash contemplates suicide until J takes over and saves him. Back in the present, Avinash leaves his hideout and gets changed. Abha rings him while he’s driving back and explains that she accidentally sent a video message to the police. Night turns to day and Avinash waits to make his move. Natasha and Abha drive together where the latter admits that she’s not sorry for what happened the previous night. She follows Avi’s instructions, who communicates with her via an ear-piece, and gives her a location to take Natasha in order to finish the job. At a secluded spot together, they start kissing until Abha handcuffs her to the door and lets Avinash take over. Here, he pushes the car off a cliff while Abha films using her phone. As we see from the past, a young Avinash and Natasha started to grow closer together but in the wake of the duo kissing, Avinash is forced to slap himself in the face by one of the school teachers. As he continues to slap, we cut back to the present where we see a grown Avinash open his eyes which is where the episode ends. With an episode predominantly revolving around flashbacks, it does help paint more of a picture surrounding the troubled life of Avinash and what’s happening here. However, it also throws into question a lot of the content we’ve seen so far, including why Siya has been taken away in the first place and why J is working against Avinash now after claiming to “protect” him all this time. We’ll have to wait and see I guess but it appears this cat and mouse game just got a whole lot more complicated.
